iPhone First Update Next Week?

Posted in iPhone Rumors at 9:42 pm by mc

Not really substantiated, but there is one rumor I found on EverythingiPhone that says we will see the first update for the iPhone next week.

Would be good if it were true.

Ordering the iPhone Online on June 29th

Posted in iPhone Rumors at 12:46 pm by mc

There has been a lot of speculation about how and when online ordering for the iPhone would take place. At this point and time, weighing all of the available information, it seems to me that online orders will begin on Friday, June 29th, at the Apple Online Store at 6:00pm Pacific Time.

There have been multiple sources that said only Apple will handle online orders initially, and I have not seen anything to dispute that. I have also seen multiple sources of information say that Apple will take orders on the 29th of June. The one last piece of the puzzle is how they would roll it out. Would it be by time zone? Would they use ip-geotargeting? Well over on EverythingiPhone, someone had a discussion with an online Apple Rep who specifically said that Apple would begin selling the iPhone online, at 6:00pm Pacific. This makes the most sense. There is no need to roll out online orders. Just go with the last time zone and be done with it.

Since online ordering is my fallback plan for not waiting in line, this works out well for me. I am in the central time zone, so this gives me two hours to try and get an iPhone before I just go home and order it online and wait for it to show up.

So best case:

2nd Generation iPhone, So Soon?

Posted in iPhone Rumors at 10:23 pm by mc

I have been hearing a lot of rumors that have a 2nd generation of the iPhone being available by the end of the year. Personally I find this implausible with the 1st generation iPhone releasing the last day of June. Apparently I am not the only one.

12GB/3G iPhone in 6 months?!? Don’t bet on it!

Over at ZDNet, they have the same feeling. Not only because of the time scale, but because the sources of these rumors are the now infamous AT&T reps, who seemingly have told us everything and anything about anything and everything that has ever existed or will exist. Even if they had some kind of broad plan to follow up with a second generation phone so quickly, they would not benefit from telling anyone. Of course I can’t get any reasons why Apple would have a new product ready before they had gotten proper feedback on the first one. I see reasons like “Because EDGE sucks”, but I do not really consider that a valid reason for releasing a second generation product so soon.

I suspect the 1st generation iPhone will have a decent window all on its own, and nobody should be holding off and waiting thinking the new one will be out at the end of the year. It is not likely going to happen.

Sim Card Won’t Fit?

Posted in iPhone Rumors at 5:22 pm by mc

With all the rumors going around, one long standing thread is populated by a fellow by the name of Kolizion. In a recent post he says that the SIM card on the iPhone has been changed, so it will not be able to be replaced with a SIM card from another cellphone.

Personally I do not care that much about being able to swap SIM cards in and out, and it is likely there are other mechanisms around the iPhone that will make this less attractive. Creating an entirely new size of SIM card though, well I will have to see it to believe it. That being said, they are trying to do a lot of things different here and are taking some chances, so if they wanted to break the SIM swapping that most Cell providers dislike, they may give it a shot.
