iPhone Wifi Tips
Since WIFI was one of the biggest features for me, it was frustrating that the first 15 hours I owned the iPhone I could not get Wifi working. I figured a few things out on my own, and also got some great advice from others. I am compiling those here for others who might have trouble with their home WIFI.
1) WEP Password. If you are using WEP encryption on your network, you have two choices, WEP Password, or WEP hex or ASCII. Notice the little bar at the top that says “WEP Password” with an arrow next to it. If you are entering the Hexadecimal code for your WEP network, you need to toggle it to “WEP Hex or ASCII”.
2) WEP Hexadecimal Password part 2. Another problem I had, even with the above toggle was it still would not take my code. If you are still having this problem, preface your code with a “$” so you might enter: “$D0EBDEED2101555CF5123AEB56A” This worked for me.
3) WIFI Still Not Working? This was me. My WIFI was still not working. My phone would only use the EDGE network. Fortunately Mav over on EverythingIphone.com was able to create a list of steps that got me working. Very much appreciated Mav.
A) Remove yourself from your Network. Go into your network and select “Forget This Network.”
B) Turn WIFI Off. From them Settings Menu for WIFI, you need to toggle the Blue On Button to the Grey Off Position.
C) Reset/Reboot your Wireless Router. Wait for your Router to fully reboot.
D) Turn WIFI back on, on your iPhone.
E) Re-Connect to your WIFI Network. Re-enter your encryption information as needed.
I have been forced to use the EDGE network since I had the phone, and it is not horribly slow, but it was very nice to finally get the phone sailing on my WIFI and using my DSL connection. Very well done. In all honesty all of those above steps should not be necessary so hopefully there is a bug that affects some people that is preventing the devices from properly communicating without a full reset. My 2Wire router has been unbelievably reliable, and I throw all kinds of devices at it, and have never had to reboot it to get one to connect. Regardless, I was able to get it working. Again thanks to all those who provided the tips, suggestions etc. If anyone has any more wifi related tips let me know and I can add them to the list.

I don’t usually respond to postings, but I felt that I needed to to this one. I just got my iPhone yesterday and have been fighting the Wi-Fi connection to my home network.
Thanks to your posting, I was able to connect in a matter of minutes.
Thanks again. Great stuff.

can anyone please tell me why I am getting the following message when I try to access my e-mail from WI-FI, but not on the edge:the connection to the server imap.aol.com failed. Like I said, I can retrieve my e-mail and the browser when I have the WiFI option set to “off”.

That is interesting Jeremy. I don’t have an answer for you off the top of my head, but I suspect there is some routing issue with the WIFI and the AOL mail server. I assume you are able to use the AOL mail server from your desktop PC through the same router?

I went through all of this and it still isn’t working. It shows a checkmark by the network, and I have signal by the Att logo on the top left of the screen, but when I try to open a page it says that it cant find the server. I dont want to throw this thing….so I think i better take a break..

Hey i think I got mine!! I changed my WEP from 64 bit to 128 bit and it seemed to work! Many of you were already using the 128 bit so maybe this has something to do with it all. Its not much faster than Edge here at home, but works internet is much faster…we’ll see tomorrow!

Shouldn’t have opened my big mouth. Aparently the iphone must store some sort of cookies like a regular pc does, because the pages I was previoulsy looking at were opening fine. Any new one still wont work….. I QUIT!!!
Brad Knowles said,

Don’t use WEP. It’s not anywhere near secure. If you use WEP, an attacker can 0wn your network in less than two minutes, and it doesn’t matter what length of keys you use.
Outside of a corporate environment, the original WPA is worse than WEP.
WPA2 is currently believed to reasonably secure, and yes the iPhone does WPA2 — I’m using it right now.
mc said,
July 2, 2007 at 9:16 am
David - What kind of router do you have?
Brad I agree with you that WEP is not secure from someone who wants to get in and get at you, but as you mentioned neither is WPA for the most part.
The real issue for most people is just to keep others from using their network incidently or for the causal person from snooping around. The reality is most people have a mix of devices, and a lot of older devices don’t do anything but WEP so if you have one WEP device you need, you are hamstrung unless you run multiple networks. Something that is just not going to happen for the average consumer.
mc said,
July 2, 2007 at 9:16 am
By the way good to know that the iPhone does WPA2.

David,
Yeah in most cases you can probably safely stick with DHCP settings. At one point in trying to get my set up to work, I did use static settings for all of them under the static tab. I would not advise that, unless you are experienced, as it is not really well-defined and not having all the information filled out correctly could potentially mess up routing and make it not work.
Hopefully it keeps working for you. Please let us know. Mine has been solid since I got it synched up.

Hey, I wanted to chime in and say thanks as well. I had been putzing with it for a day and a half. It would connect to the network and then I couldn’t browse anywhere. I tried manually entering the DNS, etc. with no luck. I could of sworn that I tried the WPA Hex before, but it this time it worked. Now, the phone is useful again. I have both EDGE and EVDO phones. EVDO just kicks EDGE’s rear any day of the week. With wifi, it’s bearable again. But now I wonder why I would carry around a iPhone with Wifi when I could have my laptop when I am in a wifi zone….oh well. I’m going to mess with it for a while and then I’ll have more impressions of the usability of EDGE.

All of this is great when I’m at home. But when I’m at the local internet cafes, I have the same problem. Joins network just fine because it is “free”. Shows up as connected. First internet page will open and then after that either can’t open because too many windows open or safari can’t find the server. So what do I do to actually use wi-fi outside of my house?

greetings… I also was very fustrated that I could not get on my home network (belkin g router, no security… with 2 macs connected, 1 wirelessly and one ethernet)… I tried all the things above with no luck, even though the iphone says you have a strong signal and you are connected! So… here is what I did to get it working… i went into the iphone and erased the DNS settings, which for some reason had an extra string of digits that i didn’t see at first, but once i started deleteing digits, more came into view?! … anyway… i then re-entered just the 2 DNS strings, and BINGO… i was able to go online with safari, yahoo weather, etc…!! very strange!

I had an old Dlink router model DI-514 (802.11b only) that had issues with internet connectivity on the iPhone. I tried all of the trouble shooting steps:
1. Hex/Acsii
2. $ in front of password
3. DNS settings deleted and/or with 4.2.2.2
4. reset the devices
5. update firmware on router
6. no secruity setting
7. and on and on
I would get one or 2 webpages and then it would not work on iPhone anymore. I have 5 computers and a Wii running off the D-link router and all seems ok (although my work VPN did not connect wirelessly only works when I hooked up directly to the router). So I thought it was time to replace the aging thing. The local Officemax had the Dlink WBR-2310 (802.11g) for sale for $40 so that is what I went with. And after the install, the iPhone worked perfectly. I did not change my settings from previous so I am still using 4.2.2.2 as the DNS setting though. I am also using the exact same security settings WEP 128 bit hex password. Since it works great for the last 2 days, I have not mess with the settings. I’ve just been enjoying youTube and sufing the web on the faster connection. I love the iPhone even more now.
Thanks for all for the troubleshoothing steps. I am surprise that apple has not release any official word on this issue. So if all else fails, replace your router.

Holy crap what a pain in the @$$ that was!! Thanks for the post on this one!!! I ended up needing to use step 1 and step 2 and that still didn’t do it for me. A step 3 that i needed to do on top of steps 1 and 2 was to enter all my information manually from the “Static” page rather than let DHCP do it automatically. I had to go to the Yahoo website and log in with my account to find the DNS information. For all you SBC Yahoo users here are the DNS addresses: 68.94.156.1(primary) & 68.94.157.1(secondary)
Even then I was having issues until I figured out that I needed to remove the third DNS address i had entered which was the address of my router (192.168.2.1). Now my connection is super stable and the pages are loading hella fast!!

I was at one bar on WI-FI, now I’m at full strength…thanks a bunch. I imagine Apple will have this fixed up in the next software update. One other tip for step (4) that helped me was to NOT select my network from the automatic list after turning WIFI back on. Instead I selected “Other”, and typed in my network name. This allowed me to directly specify the security type directly (WPA2 in my case). For some reason this helped.

This is how I fixed my network issue instantly.
For many networks, I couldn’t get my iPhone to connect — this really bothered me because sometimes I could acces wifi and sometimes I couldn’t. Open networks never seemed to be an issue, but security-enabled networks caused me a huge headache.
Try this:
1) On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > Wi-Fi
2) Select the network you wish to connect with and clicked “Forget this Network” to start from scratch
3) Navigate back to the main Wi-Fi menu
4) Selected “Other…” to manually enter in my network name and password information
5) After manually entering the network name and password information, you may be able to successfully connect
Worked for me! I didn’t have to turn off my router or the wi-fi on my iPhone for this to work.

i had the issue where my iphone was able to connect to my router with the passkey but there was no DHCP, so i had to provide static IP and it started working, but this wont be useful when you go to the public HS where you dont know what IP range they might be using.
This is what worked for me.
1) Sync the Iphone
2) Settings>general>Reset>reset network setting
once that was done and I gave the passkey for my home router, DHCP was able to get the IP…..:). (Make sure that before you do any of this your MAC (Wi-Fi) address is being seen.

Hey guys,
I jsut have a quick question that I’m sure someone will be able to clarify for me. I’m having trouble getting the iphone to switch from EDGE to Wi-Fi. When I select a Wi-Fi network to connect to, it says its connected and even shows the signal strength next to the name of the network (eg. “linksys” and little radar image next to it lights up blue and name has check mark next to it), but the icon on the top of the screen rarely, if ever, actually switches to the little radar thing. I connect at home maybe 5 out of 10 attempts and have been able to get it to “switch” to wi-fi at a few randomn hotspots, but not consistently. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the tip. It worked great. Something else I figured out that might be of help to others. Turn WiFi off if you’re not using it, saves battery. Turn it on when you need it and Safari is blazingly fast. Also, to change the homepage to something useful, like http://www.google.com/m
the mobile user page for Google, just go to that page by typing the address then return there before you shut off Safari and turn off wifi.
Safari defaults to the last page you visited as the startup page. You can also add that page to your bookmarks should you never need it again.

What worked for me was first entering the password phrase, then getting CANNOT connect message, then entering WEP, and then finally connecting! Worked fine for both of the iPhones I’ve tried.

I have wifi problem..
My speed on the wifi network falls from 600-700kbits too
12-20 kbits after first try.
I have tested with 2 brand new Zyxel routers, and my laptops messure 600-700 kbits so the wifi is alright. I have changed the channel on the router, I have disabled web-encryption (had PSK before), and it’s still the same problem.
Here’s what I have done, I have left the safari page on the http://www.iphonenetworktest.com, next I wait 10 mins (phone turns off the wifi automaticly when idle for long time), the second I turn it on I Refresh the page and the little wifi icon on the top shows it reconnects.
the test runs through at lightning speed and gives me 600-700 kbits a second.
Here is the problem :O( I rerun the test, and it never finishes… after 3-4 mins or so I get a result 12 Kbits/s!!!!!
and when I try to access pages through safari,, it takes forever.
if I let the phone idle, and retry the page, it comes like a flash and when I try a second page, it loads forever.
This is a brand new Iphone I got it yesterday, and have run out of ideas.
Btw: Edge network is completely disabled, I have tried that too..
can anyone please help? I would really appreciate it.

Setting router to G only network (again) this time rebooting router and iphone and retesting. no improvement.
Broadcast SSID - no improvement
Changed to WEP security - no improvement
Tried changing channels on access point. no improvements.
Tried using a static iP address on iphone. no improvement.
Tried reserving a static ip address for the iphone on the router and using DHCP on iphone. no improvement.
Created a firewall rule to allow all inbound traffic to iphone ip address. no improvement.
upgraded the firmware in the router. no improvement.
So now I am pretty much out of things to try. But here is something I found which indicates there is a problem. I tried pinging the iphone from my laptop (which was directly plugged into the wireless router and the response time is huge, averaging around 384ms and 44% packet loss over a time period of say 1 minute (see below), compared to when I ping the mac, which averages 1ms. Just to confirm there was no bottleneck between my laptop and iphone I ran a ping test from the router, and the latency was high also at an average of 377ms.

Ok Folks, I had this same Wi-Fi issue and I could fix it! I have done some stuffs which I believe that can help you all. Let me first try to explain what I understand about this issue and then I will say what I have tried until get it fixed.
So, many of you think that, after some tries, there is no other alternative and you should request Apple’s support or even change your iPhone to another one. Calm down!
You are having this Wi-Fi issue because your EGDE is trying to take the connection all the time. My iPhone could hardly see the networks around. So I did this steps bellow:
- My firmware was 1.1.4 and I downgraded it to 1.1.3. How? Very easy! Download this file from apple site “iPhone1,1_1.1.3_4A93_Restore.ipsw”. Connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes and, holding SHIFT, press “Restore” button. It will open a pop up asking for the file that you already downloaded. Select the file and and a few seconds. At the end, you will receive an error message saying that the iphone could not be restored. Easy, because you are in the right way. Now, download ziPhone and, with iPhone still connected and iTunes opened, click on “Do it All”. Your iPhone will be unlocked, jailbroke and activated. Now, still on ZiPhone, expand the Advanced Features, select “Fix NO WiFi” and click on “Perform Actions”. Excellent! So far, your iPhone has 1.1.3 firmware, is unlocked, jailbroke and activated. Also you ran the wifi fix.
- Turn off and on again your iPhone
- Download BossPref. I don’t know the source but you can easily find it on Google. After installed, just turn the EDGE off into this program. This is very important!
- If you still got issues to open a page, try to use a DNS. This also can help a lot!
So folks, that is what I’ve done with my iPhone. Before that I thought about throw it away but, CALM DOWN, I have sure you also will fix this issue on your iPhone.
Good luck and holp it helps!
